BE THE BEST YOU CAN BE...

WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?

Hypnotherapy is therapy that is undertaken with a subject in hypnosis. The hypnotic trance state can be likened to a relaxed, dreamlike state, however, unlike the dream state; you are conscious of your surroundings and aware of all that is happening.

Most importantly, you are in control of your own hypnotic experience.  It is up to you how deeply you will choose to go into trance, but it is relevant to point out that the deeper you do choose to go, the more benefit you will gain from your experience.

On the other hand if you happen to only experience a mild trancelike state that is also fine, for there are still benefits to be had from even a light hypnotic state.  Again, the decision is entirely yours.

The word ‘hypnosis’ itself, comes from the Greek word, ‘hypnos’ meaning ‘sleep’.  It is an abbreviation of James Braid's (1843) term ‘neuro-hypnotism’, meaning ‘sleep of the nervous system’.  Braid’s original terminology is perhaps a better way of describing hypnosis, for although you are ‘asleep’, it is not the sleep of bedtime.  Your mind remains active throughout.  It is your subconscious that the Hypnotherapist is speaking to, that part of you that remains hidden and submerged within your psyche.  The part you of you that, once reconnected with and ‘spoken’ to, can be of the most value in changing any unwanted behaviours, anxieties, traumas, stresses and habits.

Hypnotherapy treatments are often applied in order to modify a subject's behaviour, emotional content and attitudes, as well as a wide range of conditions. Treatments aim to alleviate the difficulties patients present with.

I've seen Hypnotists on television and they make people do strange things. Can this happen to me?

You can not be made to do anything against your will. In the same respect you can not say anything that you would not normally wish to be revealed.  People you see on television are either stage performers in the audience or are generally particular type of person.

Stage Hypnotists have rigorous selection procedures that they will implement before choosing anyone, even if you ‘volunteer’, which in itself suggests a willing participant who is comfortable indulging a large audience for entertainment purposes.  Stage Hypnotists will make certain of using only a certain type of personality for their shows.

Most people know of someone or someone who knows someone else, who has participated in a hypnotic entertainment show.  If you think hard, you will find that they are normally the type of people who would be willing to ‘perform’ without the use of hypnosis.  Think about it.

Can I be hypnotised?

The answer to this is, yes, if you want to.

However, there are certain states that U.S.E. Hypnosis will not endorse to hypnotise anyone under and that is anyone under the influence of alcohol or illegal substances.

Can I get stuck in a hypnotic state?

No. It may take longer for some people to return your normal waking state, in most cases this is because it is such a pleasurable experience.

It is also important to mention that modern Hypnotherapists do not wear black, swirling cloaks, top hats or use a monocle to hypnotise you.  We also do not walk around to the accompaniment of dramatic music!
